Lagos State to Demolish Distressed Buildings After Collapse

The Lagos State government announced plans to demolish distressed buildings in the Alakija area of Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area after a three-story building collapsed on Thursday, claiming nine lives. Mr.

Gbenga Omotoso, the state commissioner for information, disclosed this during a site inspection on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The governor expressed sympathy for the victims' families and reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting lives through strict enforcement of building regulations.

Following the incident, emergency responders successfully rescued 27 people, with commendations given to LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and the police for their swift action. The commissioner revealed that the collapsed structure had previously been identified as defective, and occupants had been advised to evacuate, but many ignored the government's directives.

The state aims to demolish identified unsafe structures to prevent further loss of life.
