Lassa Fever Outbreak Claims Two Lives in Katsina State

In Katsina State, Nigeria, Lassa fever has resulted in two fatalities, with a total of three confirmed cases reported. Dr.

Moham Abubakar from the Infectious Disease Federal Teaching Hospital Katsina confirmed this in an interview, noting that a female patient is currently stable and responding to treatment. The hospital's emergency response committee has acted promptly to isolate patients to prevent further spread of the disease.

Dr. Abubakar expressed concern over the changing patterns of the current Lassa fever outbreak, which has proven deadlier this year, with fatality rates rising sharply among confirmed cases.

Data indicates that as of January, there have been 1,000 suspected and confirmed cases nationwide, resulting in 145 deaths. The outbreak has shifted from its previous concentration in the northeast and south-south regions to five frontline states, including Benue, Ondo, Taraba, Edo, and Plateau.

Factors such as climate change, insecurity, and poor hygiene are contributing to this shift. Health workers are urged to treat every case with caution and implement preventive measures against rodent entry into homes.
