Lawan Calls for Probe into Yobe Airstrike Casualties

Ahmad Lawan, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence and a senator representing Yobe North, has urged for a thorough investigation into an airstrike conducted by the Nigerian Air Force at the Jilli local market in Yobe State on Sunday. Lawan's statement, which was signed by a representative, expressed condolences for the victims, who are reported to number around 100 deceased, with many others injured.

He acknowledged the sacrifices made by the armed forces in the ongoing fight against insurgency but emphasized the challenges of distinguishing combatants from civilians in complex environments. Lawan demanded a pause to ask difficult questions without compromising military integrity, asserting that the victims, largely innocent civilians who rely on the local market for their livelihoods, deserve full transparency and an independent inquiry.

He extended heartfelt condolences to the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, and the people of Geidam LGA, highlighting the need for justice for the affected families.
