Obono-Obla Arrested: Lawmaker Clarifies Allegations

Obono-Obla, a former presidential adviser appointed by Muhammadu Buhari in 2016, was arrested by the Cross River State Police Command on allegations of forgery and cult-related activities. Lawmaker Omini clarified that the arrest was lawful, countering claims that Obono-Obla was abducted by unidentified security operatives.

The lawmaker also addressed accusations made by Obono-Obla, who had publicly linked Omini to cult violence and a person's death. In August 2025, Obono-Obla allegedly led police to arrest cultists in Ugep.

He has faced multiple allegations of corruption, including a 2019 suspension from his role as chairman of the Special Presidential Investigative Panel for the Recovery of Public Property due to an ICPC investigation into financial improprieties. He was arrested in March 2020 and later rearraigned in 2021 on charges of N10.1 million fraud related to falsified school results.
