Lawmaker Advocates for Indigenous Defense Equipment in Nigeria

Hon. Babajimi Benson, the Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, called on the Armed Forces of Nigeria to prioritize the procurement of locally manufactured defense equipment during the unveiling of X-Shield’s AEGIS-X 2.0 light tactical armoured vehicle in Abuja. Represented by his Chief of Staff, Benjamin Ekeyi, Benson stressed that supporting indigenous manufacturers would strengthen national security and reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.

He expressed concern over the country’s security situation, highlighting the loss of personnel due to inadequate protective equipment. Major General Babatunde Ibrahim Alaya, Director-General of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), noted significant progress in Nigeria’s defense industry, which has seen indigenous companies developing innovative products.

Former DICON Director-General Major General Victor Ezugwu (rtd.) praised the collaboration between DICON and local manufacturers, asserting it enhances Nigeria’s defense capabilities. Charles Ibanga, Managing Director of X-Shield, stated that the AEGIS-X 2.0 was designed specifically for Nigeria’s operational environment.
