Iconic Costume Designer Bob Mackie Passes Away at 87

Bob Mackie, the legendary costume and fashion designer, died at the age of 87, as announced by his team on his official Instagram page on September 14. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

Mackie was renowned for his glamorous and elaborate designs, particularly his long-standing partnership with Cher, for whom he created many iconic stage and television costumes, including the memorable look at the 1986 Academy Awards. Their collaboration began after they met on 'The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour' and lasted for decades, making it one of the most recognized designer-performer partnerships in entertainment.

Mackie also designed costumes for other notable figures, including Carol Burnett, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Barbra Streisand, Liza Minnelli, and Bette Midler. He started his career as a sketch artist in Hollywood, working with established designers like Edith Head and Jean Louis.

His work on 'The Carol Burnett Show' earned him 32 Emmy nominations and nine wins, along with three Academy Award nominations for 'Lady Sings the Blues', 'Funny Lady', and 'Pennies From Heaven'. In 2019, he won a Tony Award for Best Costume Design for 'The Cher Show'.
