Senator Ekpenyong Backs Suicide Prevention Bill to Destigmatize Mental Health

Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong from Cross River South Senatorial District reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the Suicide Prevention Bill in the Senate. The bill, which aims to decriminalize attempted suicide and establish a comprehensive suicide prevention framework in Nigeria, passed its first reading in February.

Senator Ekpenyong received support from various stakeholders, including the Suicide Prevention Advocacy Working Group, mental health practitioners, and civil society organizations. The bill is seen as crucial in destigmatizing mental health issues and providing support to vulnerable individuals.

Professor Taiwo Lateef Sheikh emphasized the importance of not criminalizing attempted suicide, citing its negative impact on those already struggling with mental health challenges.
