Nigerian Senate Order Paper 29 January 2026: Key Bills & Reports
On Thursday, 29th January 2026, the Nigerian Senate sat to consider five new bills at First Reading and two major committee reports, including a proposal to repeal and re-enact the Electoral Act 2022. The session also included three citizen petitions against federal agencies, meaning ordinary Nigerians seeking redress from government bodies had their cases scheduled for Senate attention.
The Nigerian Senate's agenda for 29th January 2026 was packed with legislative and oversight business affecting health, the judiciary, and elections.
Five bills were listed for First Reading — the earliest stage of lawmaking — all sponsored by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele. These covered amendments to the Federal Medical Centres Act, the Federal High Court Act, the Court of Appeal Act, and the University Teaching Hospitals Act, as well as an amendment to the law establishing the National Hospital for Women and Children in Abuja.
On committee reports, senators were scheduled to receive and consider a report on the Electoral Act (Repeal & Enactment) Bill, 2026, sponsored by Senator Simon Bako Lalong of Plateau South. This bill proposes replacing the current Electoral Act 2022 entirely.
The Senate also planned to hear a committee report covering three citizen petitions: one from a suspended Energy Commission worker, one from a woman whose car was allegedly seized by Customs in Lagos, and one from clients alleging illegal occupation of their land in Port Harcourt by the Nigeria Police Force.
Several committee meetings were also scheduled, including a stakeholders' summit on the North West Development Commission set for Saturday, 31st January 2026 in Kaduna.
