On Wednesday, 28th January 2026, the Nigerian Senate had a packed agenda that included first readings of six new bills covering education, agriculture, waste management, and economic governance. The Nigerian Senate's sitting on Wednesday, 28th January 2026 featured six bills scheduled for first reading. These included the Gifted and Talented Centres (Establishment) Bill, 2026, sponsored by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele; a bill to establish a National Economic Coordinating and Intelligence Committee; an amendment to the National Centre for Economic Management Act; a Veterinary Teaching Hospitals Bill; a Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management (Enforcement) Bill; and a bill to establish a National Farmers and Agriculturists Protection Board.
Under Orders of the Day, the Senate was scheduled to receive and consider a committee report on the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal & Enactment) Bill, 2026, sponsored by Senator Bako Lalong of Plateau South. If passed, this bill would repeal the current Electoral Act and replace it with new legislation.
Two motions were listed. Senator Joseph Ikpea of Edo Central called for federal intervention to address worsening gully erosion and deforestation across Esan Land in Edo State. Senator Emmanuel Nwachukwu of Anambra South urged action on a collapsed bridge and deteriorating road along the Okija Spur corridor, which has disrupted movement and economic activity since March 2025.
Several committee meetings were also scheduled across subsequent days.
