INEC Urges Editors to Avoid Premature Election Results

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has charged editors across Nigeria to resist the premature declaration of election results and to strengthen fact-checking and digital verification mechanisms in preparation for the 2027 general elections. INEC warned that publishing privately collated results before official declarations could create conflicting narratives and undermine voter confidence.

This charge was delivered by INEC chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), represented by Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, the resident electoral commissioner for Enugu State, during the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) 2026. Amupitan emphasized the challenges posed by generative artificial intelligence, deepfake technology, and automated bot networks, which could be exploited to create misleading content.

He urged editors to establish specialized fact-checking desks and utilize deepfake detection software to ensure the authenticity of election-related materials. Amupitan also cautioned against the amplification of unofficial results, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
