Lisabi Festival Celebrates Unity and Sacrificial Leadership

The 39th Lisabi Festival, commemorated by Mustapha Abdulhakeem, a high chief in Egba land, underscores the importance of unity and sacrificial leadership among the Egba people. The festival honors Lisabi Agbongbo Akala, a historical figure whose actions in 1760 significantly reshaped the destiny of the Egba community during their resistance against the Oyo Empire's control.

Abdulhakeem noted that the Egba people faced considerable hardship under the Oyo Empire, which limited their autonomy. The resistance led by Lisabi was not spontaneous but a calculated effort to reclaim their identity and freedom.

Although the aftermath of the revolt did not immediately stabilize the region, it ignited a spirit of independence among the Egba. The festival serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Lisabi and the collective actions necessary for progress, encouraging current generations to embody the spirit of unity and resilience in navigating contemporary challenges.
