Local Arms Manufacturers Push for DICON Act Implementation

Local arms manufacturers, represented by the Defence Industry Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, are urging for the full implementation of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Act 2023. This act aims to accelerate indigenous defense product development and reduce Nigeria's dependence on imported military hardware.

The call was made during a general meeting held in Abuja, with General Secretary Dian Engr Kola Balogun emphasizing the need for self-reliance in defense manufacturing. The act is designed to provide a framework for local manufacturers, facilitate technology transfer, and create jobs while conserving foreign exchange.

The association noted the importance of strengthening Nigeria's defense industrial base to address growing security challenges and called for coordinated strategies among stakeholders. They also expressed concerns about weak coordination within the defense industry ecosystem, which they identified as a major bottleneck to growth.

Additionally, 18 new members were admitted to the association, reflecting increased investor confidence in Nigeria's defense manufacturing sector.
