Labour Party Suspends Key Members Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Labour Party, under the leadership of Nnenadi Usman, has taken significant disciplinary action by suspending several members, including former national secretary Umar Farouk and ex-public secretary Obiora Ifoh, among others. This decision was made during a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on March 17, 2026, as part of the party's efforts to maintain discipline and integrity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The NEC approved a timeline for conducting primary elections, with gubernatorial, senatorial, and House of Representatives primaries scheduled for May 15, 2026, and presidential primaries set for May 23, 2026. The party aims to comply with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines and enhance its membership registration process.

The suspensions were attributed to acts of indiscipline and anti-party activities that allegedly compromised the party's national secretariat. The NEC emphasized the importance of maintaining party discipline and unity as they prepare for the upcoming elections.
