Nigerian Political Parties Gear Up for 2027 Primaries

Political activities are intensifying in Nigeria as major parties prepare for the 2027 general elections. The All Progressives Congress (APC) is currently conducting its primaries, with significant participation expected across 774 local government areas.

However, the party announced a postponement of its House of Representatives primaries due to unresolved issues regarding aspirants' screening and logistical challenges. APC leaders, including Governor Hope Uzodimma, have urged aspirants to demonstrate loyalty and discipline during the primaries.

Meanwhile, two factions of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), led by Tanimu Turaki and Nyesom Wike, are making separate arrangements for their candidacy processes. The APC aims to conduct direct primaries in 8,809 wards, but the party's preference for a consensus arrangement has faced opposition.

The primaries for the Senate and state House of Assembly are scheduled for May 18 and May 20, 2026, respectively.
