Nigerian Legal Committee Warns Against Use of 'Blue Silk' Title by Lawyers

The Legal Practitioners' Privileges Committee (LPPC) in Nigeria issued a warning to lawyers regarding the use of the title 'Blue Silk,' emphasizing that it is not officially recognized and does not have statutory backing. The LPPC, established under the Legal Practitioners Act, is the sole authority responsible for conferring the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), the highest mark of professional distinction in the legal profession in Nigeria.

The committee expressed concern over the introduction of the 'Blue Silk' title within certain quarters of the legal community, highlighting that it suggests a parallel or alternative rank to SAN. Kabir Akanbi, the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, signed the statement cautioning legal practitioners against establishing or presenting themselves as 'Blue Silk,' as it could violate professional conduct rules.

The LPPC reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the integrity and exclusivity of the SAN rank, emphasizing that any attempt to confer or adopt unauthorized titles could face disciplinary actions.
