Lagos Assembly Halts Makoko Demolition Amid Protests and Arrests

The Lagos State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, has intervened to halt the demolition of the Makoko urban slum in Lagos Mainland. The Assembly's ad hoc committee, chaired by Hon.

Noheem Adam, ordered the immediate stoppage of the exercise due to tensions and arrests of activists protesting the demolitions. The Assembly aims to engage stakeholders in discussions, with a commitment to compensating residents whose properties were demolished.

The decision came after hundreds of displaced Makoko residents staged protests at the Assembly. The Assembly also plans to create a task force involving residents to ensure their involvement in future processes.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's special adviser on urban renewal, Dr. Babatunde Olajide, disclosed plans for a $2 million redevelopment project for Makoko to meet international standards.

Community leaders expressed satisfaction with the Assembly's intervention and commitment to addressing grievances peacefully.
