Lagos Assembly Halts Makoko Demolitions, Promises Compensation

The Lagos State House of Assembly convened a meeting with community leaders affected by recent demolitions in Makoko and Oworonshoki. Noheem Adam, the Chairman of the House Committee on Makoko Demolition, directed relevant ministries and agencies to immediately stop further demolitions in the area.

The government aims to protect lives and properties while addressing the dangers associated with living near high-tension power lines. Chairman of Yaba Local Council Development Area, Bayo Adefuy, distributed food items to displaced residents in Makoko.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has earmarked 2 million naira for the development of Makoko. The government explained that the demolitions were carried out for urban renewal and safety reasons due to structures being built within 100 meters of high-tension transmission lines.

The government assured residents of compensation and ongoing engagement with the affected communities.
