Makoko Residents Protest Demolitions and Forced Evictions in Lagos

Makoko residents staged a protest on Ikeja Bridge in Lagos, condemning ongoing demolitions and forced evictions in low-income waterfront communities. They accused the Lagos State Government of demolishing areas in Makoko, Oworonshoki, and other regions without proper compensation or resettlement plans for affected residents.

The protesters demanded a halt to further demolitions, immediate suspension of ongoing demolitions, relief materials, compensation, and a human resettlement policy. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was called upon to engage in dialogue with affected communities.

The residents highlighted the inhumanity of the demolitions, which violated existing court orders against forced evictions. The protest aimed to draw attention to the plight of those rendered homeless overnight due to the demolitions, emphasizing the need for urban renewal with proper planning rather than demolitions.
