Makoko Residents Reject Relocation After Demolitions

Residents of Makoko have expressed strong opposition to a proposed relocation to Epe after the Lagos State government initiated demolition of their homes. Sylvest, a representative from the Makoko Gunuvi Student Association, stated that there was no agreement reached with the government regarding relocation, despite the announcement being made.

He condemned the lack of consultation with the community, emphasizing that democracy allows people to choose their future. The Oloto royal family, claiming ancestral ownership of the waterfront, also raised concerns about the government's recognition of ownership.

The Lagos State House of Assembly, represented by Noheem Babatund Adam, noted that the demolition has displaced many residents, including vulnerable groups. The assembly recommended that Governor Babajid Sanwo-Olu direct a special advisory group to address the situation.

Residents, including 75-year-old elders, have vowed to peacefully protest against the relocation plan, asserting their rights to their ancestral homes and demanding transparency from the government.
