NUJ Links Malnutrition and Drug Abuse to Insecurity

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has identified malnutrition and drug abuse as critical factors contributing to insecurity in Nigeria. This warning was issued during a security summit organized by the NUJ in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.

Comrade Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi, the NUJ President, highlighted the often-overlooked consequences of malnutrition, which affects children's physical and cognitive development, ultimately destabilizing society. He noted alarming statistics regarding drug abuse among Nigerian youth, calling for urgent measures to combat this growing trend.

The summit also featured former NUJ President Chris Isiguzo, who urged journalists to exercise caution when reporting on security issues. Musikilu Mojeed from the International Press Institute advocated for dialogue between media organizations and security agencies to resolve disputes amicably, rather than through coercion.

The NUJ emphasized the importance of media's role in informing the public and the need for regular engagement with security institutions to manage misunderstandings.
