NIMR Study Reveals Efficacy Issues in Nigerian Herbal Drugs

Dr. Oluwagbeminga Aina, the Deputy Director of Research at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) in Lagos, revealed that many herbal drugs in Nigeria are safe but lack efficacy.

A study conducted over six years found that out of 46 herbal medicinal products in the market, none passed efficacy tests. The research highlighted the discrepancy between claimed effectiveness by producers and actual results.

Challenges faced in herbal medicine research include funding, lack of laboratory equipment, and qualified manpower. The importance of ensuring both safety and efficacy in herbal drugs was emphasized.
