239 First-Class Lecturers Quit UNILAG Due to Poor Salary, Former VC Reveals

A mass exodus of 239 first-class lecturers has occurred at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) over the past seven years due to poor remuneration, as confirmed by former VC Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe. Only 17 out of 256 first-class graduate lecturers employed between 2015 and 2022 remain at the institution.

Ogundipe highlighted the challenges of low salaries, unfavorable working conditions, and lack of motivation among lecturers. He emphasized the need for increased government funding in the education sector to prevent a future dominated by underprepared candidates.

The ASUU strike at the University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State was also noted.
