Dr. Ikokwu Highlights Journalism's Role in Society

Dr. Constance Ikokwu, an analyst and anchor at Aris TV, spoke at an annual lecture for mass communication students at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in Anambra State.

The event aimed to inspire students to engage in journalism that informs society and holds the government accountable. Ikokwu highlighted the power of storytelling in journalism, asserting that it shapes public understanding of issues such as injustice and conflict.

She referenced the 2020 EndSARS protests and the case of George Floyd in the United States as examples of how media coverage can influence public discourse. Ikokwu stressed that journalists have a responsibility to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and expose societal issues, thereby acting as a watchdog for democracy.

She emphasized that journalism goes beyond merely reporting facts; it involves questioning the underlying messages and consequences of stories told, which can significantly impact societal awareness and justice.
