NERC Reports 63.1% Metering Rate Amid Ongoing Gaps

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reported that the national metering rate for electricity consumers rose to 63.10 percent in August 2026, up from 62.37 percent in July. This increase translates to 8,045,565 metered customers out of 12,749,789 active electricity customers, leaving 4,704,224 consumers without meters.

The number of metered customers grew by 1.8 percent from 7,903,819 in July, while the unmetered customer count decreased by 63,752. Despite this progress, the pace of new meter installations slowed, with distribution companies (DisCos) metering only 141,746 customers in August, a decline of 11.4 percent from July.

Eko Electricity Distribution Company led with 89.6 percent metering coverage, while Jos DisCo had the lowest at 37.6 percent. The Federal Government, under Minister of Power Joseph Tegbe, continues to prioritize metering as part of power sector reforms, focusing on distribution, transparency, and customer engagement.

With active customer numbers increasing, DisCos must accelerate installations to avoid widening the metering gap.
