Mexico City's Axolotl Project Faces Criticism Ahead of World Cup

Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Mexico City has initiated a beautification program themed around the axolotl, a local amphibian, which has drawn criticism from residents. The project, led by Mayor Clara Brugada, involves painting axolotl images on walls, bridges, and traffic barriers across the city.

Critics, including commuter Manuel Martinez, argue that the initiative is a waste of funds that could be better spent on road repairs and crime prevention. Public policy specialist Ernesto Moura has warned of potential safety risks associated with the repainting of infrastructure, particularly regarding nighttime visibility.

Despite these concerns, Mayor Brugada has dismissed the complaints, stating that the project injects color and energy into the city. The axolotl, which is threatened due to habitat destruction and pollution, has become a symbol for the city as it prepares to host the World Cup.
