Nigerian Military Trials 36 Personnel for Coup Plot

The Nigerian military has initiated a closed-door trial at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja for 36 military personnel accused of attempting to overthrow the democratic government. The trial, which began on April 24, 2026, was conducted by a general court martial amid strict security measures, with journalists barred from the venue.

Major General Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, stated that the trial adheres to strict due process and aims to uphold justice without bias. This action follows the military's earlier announcement on January 26, 2026, regarding the arrest of 16 senior officers for indiscipline and alleged involvement in a coup plot uncovered after a comprehensive investigation.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau (retd) indicated that the officers had already undergone disciplinary procedures for previous offenses. The military's commitment to discipline and accountability is emphasized, as the case is seen as a serious threat to national security.
