Nigeria Military Court Martial to Resume May 8 for Officers

The military court martial in Nigeria is set to resume on May 8, 2023, according to Major General Samaila Uba, a spokesman for the Defence Headquarters (DHQ). This court martial involves 36 military officers currently on trial for their alleged roles in a failed coup attempt.

The proceedings will take place behind closed doors, with strict security measures in place at the military facility in Abuja, where the trial was held last week. The military authorities have indicated that subsequent sessions of the court martial will continue without public or media access.

The court martial was inaugurated on a Friday, and the accused officers have been brought before a panel of military judges. In a related note, six civilians are also standing trial in a federal high court in Abuja for their alleged involvement in the coup plot, with all defendants pleading not guilty to the charges against them.

Nigeria has experienced multiple military takeovers since gaining independence from Britain in 1960 but has maintained uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999.
