Airstrike on Borno-Yobe Market Leaves Dozens Dead

An airstrike conducted by the Nigerian Air Force on a market in Jilli, located on the Borno-Yobe border, has led to a tragic incident with at least 30 confirmed deaths and many more feared dead. The attack, which occurred at approximately 2:46 PM, was part of Operation Hadin Kai aimed at suspected Boko Haram members believed to be gathering in the area.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as people panicked and fled during the bombing. Local officials, including Malam Lawan Zanna, confirmed that 20 individuals were hospitalized, with some referred to teaching hospitals in Damaturu.

The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, defended the operation, stating that the area is a known insurgent stronghold, while also acknowledging the potential for civilian casualties. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the strike as a tragic error and called for accountability.

The military has initiated an investigation into the incident, which has sparked outrage and raised serious concerns about civilian safety amid ongoing counter-insurgency operations in northeastern Nigeria.
