Military Investigates Stray Bullet Killing of Girl in Borno

On April 4, 2026, a 14-year-old girl was tragically killed by a stray bullet in Maiduguri, Borno State, during a social event. The incident occurred around 2:00 PM when members of an escort team attached to the local government area chairman allegedly engaged in sporadic gunfire during a celebration.

Sani Uba, confirmed the girl's death and announced an investigation into the incident. Five suspects were arrested in connection with the unlawful use of firearms during the event.

The suspects, identified as Muhammad Husaini (28), Abba Jiddu (25), Abba Kolo Moham (20), Ali Adam (20), and Nura Moham (18), are currently in custody and will be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation and prosecution. The Theatre Command condemned the act, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to regulations regarding firearm use.

Amnesty International has also called on the federal government to conduct a thorough investigation into the girl's death.
