REA's Mini-Grids to Solve Nigeria's Power Supply Issues

Dr. Abba Aliyu, the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), stated that the agency's latest initiative involves deploying mini-grids to tackle Nigeria's persistent power supply challenges.

In a recent interview, he explained that these mini-grids will be installed directly within isolated communities, ensuring they have complete independent electricity. Dr.

Aliyu emphasized that the agency has learned from the failures of the national grid and is committed to including a dedicated distribution network of 100 meters for every mini-grid installation. This network will feature a SCADA system for real-time monitoring via mobile devices.

The current deployment includes 50 interconnected mini-grids expected to inject 280 megawatts of reliable supply into the grid. The REA aims to create a resilient energy architecture that mitigates vulnerabilities associated with traditional central models, ensuring that power supply is consistent even when the distribution companies (DISCOs) fail to provide electricity.
