Foreign Affairs Minister Tuggar Resigns for Governorship Bid

Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, submitted his resignation from President Bola Tinubu's cabinet on Monday, as confirmed by spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa. Tuggar's resignation is part of his plan to contest the Bauchi State governorship election under the platform of the Progressive Congress (APC) in 2027.

This move follows a presidential directive issued in March, which requires political appointees interested in electoral positions to resign from their offices. The directive, communicated by Georg Akum, mandates that such resignations must occur by March 31, 2026, to prevent conflicts of interest as the 2027 general elections approach.

The directive applies to various categories of political office holders, including ministers and special assistants, as outlined in Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act 2026.
