Nigeria Hosts National Plastic Summit to Tackle Waste

The National Plastic Summit 2026 was inaugurated by Minister Glori Ohagwu in Abuja, focusing on urgent actions to address the growing challenges of plastic waste. Minister of State Dr.

Salihu Usman Lawal highlighted that plastic pollution impacts agriculture, fisheries, tourism, public health, and the economy. He outlined priorities such as implementing stronger policies, investing in recycling infrastructure, and promoting behavior change.

The summit, themed "Innovate, Include, Invest: Circular Plastic Economy in Africa," brought together stakeholders from government, industry, and civil society to advance a circular plastic economy in Nigeria. Dr.

Osasuyi Dirisu from the Policy Innovation Centre emphasized the need to transform waste into economic opportunities. The summit established a financing task force to mobilize investments for plastic circular recycling infrastructure.

Roisin Green from GPAP commended Nigeria's progress and noted the next phase requires implementing state-level green initiatives. Adebisi Adeoti, Managing Director of Dow West Africa, reiterated the industry's commitment to supporting circular plastic solutions.
