MAN Calls for Suspension of NESREA's Plastic Ban Proposal

Segun Ajayi Kadir, the Director General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), disclosed that plastic pollution poses a significant waste management challenge in Nigeria. He stated that the issue is not solely the material itself but also the inadequate collection, sorting, recycling, and disposal systems.

MAN has urged the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) to suspend its proposed ban on single-use plastics below 80 microns until a comprehensive regulatory impact assessment is conducted. Kadir emphasized the importance of a strong enforcement of anti-litter regulations rather than a blanket prohibition.

He highlighted that effective waste management systems and recycling infrastructure are essential for achieving sustainable environmental outcomes. The association remains committed to collaborating with government stakeholders to advance science-based economic solutions for plastic waste management in Nigeria, while also ensuring that industrial growth and economic competitiveness are not sacrificed.
