Nigeria's Minister Unveils Nationwide Fibre Expansion Plans

Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, reiterated the Federal Government's commitment to expanding digital connectivity across Nigeria. He announced plans to deploy 90,000 kilometers of open-access fibre infrastructure through Project BRIDGE, which will increase the existing fibre backbone from approximately 35,000 kilometers to around 125,000 kilometers.

This initiative aims to reach all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and the 774 local government areas. The expansion will be supported by the National Connectivity Acceleration Programme, which will introduce thousands of new telecommunications towers to underserved communities.

Additionally, the government plans to launch two communications satellites and implement a national alphanumeric postcode system to enhance digital services. Tijani emphasized that these projects, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have the potential to significantly impact Nigeria's digital economy.

He also announced his withdrawal from the race for Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union to focus on these initiatives.
