FG to Connect Rural Communities to Telecom Services by 2027

The Federal Government of Nigeria aims to connect rural and riverine communities to telecommunications services by mid-2027, as part of its strategy to bridge the digital divide and support a $1 trillion economic ambition. Dr Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, made this announcement at the inaugural BINI RIVA LIFE Festival in Ogboghoro Community, Delta State, during the fifth coronation anniversary of the Olu of Warri, His Majesty Ogiame Atuwatse III.

The initiative involves the installation of 3,700 telecommunications towers in rural and hard-to-reach riverine areas, with installation already underway in Ogboghoro and ongoing work in Ogheye. Dr Tijani plans to return to these communities in October to officially launch the network.

He stated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the program, which is crucial for achieving the administration’s economic target, emphasizing that millions of Nigerians must not remain excluded from digital connectivity to unlock the economic potential of these communities.
