Mistrust in INEC Threatens Nigeria's 2027 Elections

In an exclusive interview with Daily Post, Professor Murtala Muhammad, a political analyst, expressed concerns that increasing mistrust in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may jeopardize the integrity of the 2027 general elections in Nigeria. He highlighted that doubts regarding INEC's neutrality have deepened political divisions and could lead to legal challenges.

Muhammad pointed out that recent controversies, including INEC's decision not to recognize the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have shaped public perception of the electoral body. He noted that opposition leaders have become vocal critics of INEC, calling for the resignation of its chairman due to perceived biases favoring the ruling party.

Muhammad emphasized that the erosion of public trust in INEC could significantly impact voter confidence and turnout in the upcoming elections, warning that unresolved issues could lead to increased litigation and instability, particularly within the ADC, which is currently facing factional disputes.
