INEC's Assurances on 2027 Elections: Trust Issues Arise

Professor Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), spoke at a town hall meeting in Abuja regarding the upcoming 2027 general elections. He acknowledged that while the commission aims to improve the electoral process, it cannot guarantee a 100% flawless election, particularly concerning the electronic transmission of results.

Amupitan emphasized the importance of voter education and transparency in managing logistics. He outlined significant dates for the elections: the presidential and national assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, while the governorship and state house assembly elections will take place on March 6, 2027.

These dates were adjusted following President Bola Tinubu's assent to amendments in the Electoral Act 2026. Criticism arose from human rights activist Chidi Odinkalu, who questioned INEC's ability to conduct free and fair elections, citing logistical issues in the FCT.

Amupitan assured that the commission would strive for near-perfect elections despite the challenges.
