MMIA Achieves Fastest Growth in Africa's Aviation Sector

In September 2026, Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos achieved the fastest growth in scheduled seat capacity among Africa's ten largest airports, reaching 470,000 scheduled seats, which is a 24.1% increase from the previous year, adding 90,600 seats. According to OAG African Aviation Market Data, MMIA outperformed Casablanca’s Mohammed V International Airport, which grew by 13.5% with an additional 87,500 seats.

Cairo International Airport maintained the highest capacity with 1.79 million scheduled seats, reflecting an 11.2% year-on-year increase. Nigeria's overall aviation market also experienced robust growth, adding 322,800 scheduled airline seats, bringing total capacity to 1.19 million, a 37.4% increase from September 2025.

Air Peace, Nigeria's largest airline, recorded a 54.7% growth in scheduled seat capacity to 354,804 seats. The Federal Government's establishment of the Nigeria Aircraft Leasing Company in May aims to enhance domestic airlines' access to aircraft.
