Africa's Airline Capacity Grows to 25.8 Million Seats

In September 2026, Africa's aviation industry experienced a 9.4% increase in scheduled airline capacity, reaching 25.8 million seats, according to OAG data. This growth reflects rising air travel demand and connectivity across the continent, with international flights making up 78% of the total capacity.

The ranking of major African airport gateways was based on scheduled outbound seats. Cairo International Airport emerged as the leading airport with approximately 1.79 million scheduled outbound seats, marking an 11.2% year-on-year increase.

Addis Ababa Bole International Airport ranked second with about 1.19 million seats, up 6.5% year-on-year. O.R.

Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg secured third place with approximately 1.16 million seats, reflecting a 5.0% year-on-year increase. Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca and Cape Town International Airport followed in fourth and fifth positions, respectively, with 730,000 and 590,000 scheduled outbound seats, showing year-on-year increases of 13.5% and 11.3%.
