African Airlines See 6.4% Demand Growth in July 2026

In July 2026, African airlines achieved a 6.4 percent year-on-year increase in passenger demand, making them one of the top performers in global aviation, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). This growth surpassed the global average, where international passenger traffic saw only a 0.2 percent increase amid economic challenges.

African carriers expanded their seat capacity by 9.0 percent compared to July 2025, although this led to a 1.8 percentage point decrease in the regional load factor, which stood at 74.1 percent. IATA's Senior Vice President Sustainability and Chief Economist, Marie Owens Thomsen, noted that despite high fuel costs and geopolitical tensions, there is confidence in demand for the remainder of the year, with an expected 3 percent expansion of seat capacity in September.

The broader global aviation market faced declines in North America and the Middle East, contrasting with Africa's robust performance.
