Modern Hydrography Essential for Nigeria's Maritime Safety

Rear Admiral Olumide Fadahunsi, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Hydrographic Agency (NHA), stated that modern hydrography is crucial for maritime safety and the growth of Nigeria's blue economy. He made these remarks during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, ahead of the 2026 World Hydrography Day celebration.

Fadahunsi noted that Nigeria aims to improve organizational standards and share ocean data to enhance maritime operations and protect the country's environment. He emphasized that accurate ocean data, derived from modern surveys, is essential for safe navigation, port development, offshore energy operations, and fisheries management.

The celebration of World Hydrography Day on June 20 will include a plenary session bringing together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss improving ocean data access. Three technical papers will focus on the blue economy, geospatial intelligence, and sustainable offshore energy development, aiming to strengthen collaboration among maritime institutions, regulatory bodies, academia, and the private sector.
