Nigeria Enhances Hydrography for Maritime Security

Nigeria is prioritizing hydrography as a strategic pillar for maritime security, as articulated by Dr. Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence, during a courtesy visit with Rear Admiral O.O.

Fadahunsi, the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of the National Hydrographic Agency (NHA). Dr.

Matawalle stated that hydrography must evolve beyond traditional maritime mapping to support national security and sustainable economic plans. He expressed the administration's commitment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthen the NHA's capabilities in providing accurate maritime data.

The minister noted that enhancing Nigeria's hydrographic capacity is essential for improving navigational safety, maritime security, and sustainable maritime development policies. He acknowledged the growing recognition of the need to control and understand maritime spaces to protect national interests and trade routes.

Rear Admiral Fadahunsi appreciated the minister's support and assured that the agency would strengthen collaboration with relevant ministries and departments to build an integrated approach toward hydrographic resilience and improve service delivery.
