Political Tensions Rise in Rivers State Ahead of 2027 Elections

Political tensions have intensified in Rivers State as Governor Siminalayi Fubara reportedly received a cold shoulder from the APC governorship screening committee led by APC National Chairman Nentaw Yilwatda. This situation emerges during the APC screening process, which includes influential figures such as Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, and Kingsley Chinda, the Minority Leader in the House of Representatives.

The screening exercise is closely monitored, reflecting the rivalry and support dynamics within the state ahead of the 2027 elections. Additionally, a report indicates that capital expenditures across 26 state governments have sharply declined to ₦2.19 trillion in the first quarter of 2026, raising concerns about slow infrastructure development and increasing fiscal pressures as political activities ramp up ahead of the elections.
