Mother and Four Children Die in Kwara Building Collapse

On Tuesday at approximately 5 a.m., a mother and her four children died when the boys’ quarters of a three-storey building collapsed in Ilorin, Kwara State, at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, beside Gogoro Mosque. Eight family members were trapped in the rubble, with three survivors, including the father, who was rescued after calling for help from inside a toilet.

A resident involved in the rescue, identified as Abdul, reported that the mother and her five-year-old child were found dead. The eldest daughter, Mistura, was a graduate of Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, and was about to start her National Youth Service Corps program.

The building had shown signs of structural distress, including visible cracks, prior to the collapse. A family member noted that the section that collapsed did not have the previously observed cracks, which were on the front part of the building, where repairs were planned before the tragedy.
