Amnesty International Condemns Borno Commissioner’s Threats

Amnesty International has expressed concern regarding the lack of action from security agencies against Sainna Buba, the Borno State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, following his alleged threats to punish individuals who do not support the All Progressives Congress (APC). Buba made these remarks during a campaign inauguration for the City Boy Movement in Maiduguri on August 29, stating, “the government is our government,” and that those who support it would enjoy “the honey.” Amnesty International described Buba's comments as a direct threat and a danger to democracy, insisting that he must face justice for what it termed subtle incitement.

The organization noted that despite publicly available evidence, no action has been taken against Buba. Amnesty International emphasized the importance of protecting the human rights of Borno State residents, asserting that citizens should be free to make political choices without intimidation.

The organization plans to continue monitoring and documenting threats and abuses leading up to the 2027 general elections.
