MSF Raises Alarm Over Escalating Cholera Outbreak In Zamfara

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has raised concerns about the escalating cholera outbreak in Zamfara State, Nigeria. The outbreak, which began in early August, is occurring in a context of insecurity, displacement, and limited access to clean water and sanitation, worsened by the rainy season.

Cholera, endemic in Nigeria for a decade, can be fatal within hours if left untreated. MSF has scaled up water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions in hotspot areas and is supporting the Ministry of Health in establishing cholera treatment centers.

As of August 5, over 1,500 suspected cases have been reported in Zurmi, Talata Mafara, and other affected areas. MSF is urging residents to adopt preventive measures such as boiling water, practicing regular handwashing, and ensuring cholera vaccinations are up to date.

Urgent action is needed to prevent further spread of the disease and save lives. MSF is committed to working with the community and health authorities to provide timely treatment.
