Musk Questions AI Claim on Nigeria's Birth Rates

Elon Musk expressed surprise after his artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, claimed that Nigeria recorded approximately four million more births than the entire European Union in 2024. In a conversation shared by Musk on X, Grok stated that Nigeria had around 7.5 million births, while the EU had about 3.5 million, leading to a difference of roughly four million.

Musk sought clarification, and Grok reiterated its figures, explaining that the one million figure was a misinterpretation when comparing Nigeria to all of Europe, including Russia. The exchange sparked widespread debate on X regarding Nigeria's population growth and Europe's declining birth rates.

However, PUNCH Online noted that the figures provided by Grok could not be independently verified, as there is no single publicly available demographic database confirming such statistics. Estimates from organizations like the United Nations and the World Bank indicate Nigeria has one of the highest fertility rates globally, while many European countries face declining birth rates.
