Peter Obi Critiques Court Ruling on Political Party Registration

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, responded to a Federal High Court judgment delivered by Justice Isah Dashen in Lokoja, which nullified an earlier order for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register political parties, specifically the New Democratic Congress (NDC). Obi described the judgment as an unnecessary and serious setback for Nigerian democracy.

He warned that constant institutional interference threatens the future of millions of citizens and expressed concern over a growing pattern of institutional decline across the country. He emphasized that democracy cannot survive when the legislature and judiciary lose their independence and credibility.

Obi condemned similar deregistration situations affecting other parties, such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He urged Nigerians to rise above narrow partisan interests and focus on building a united nation founded on justice, strong institutions, and equal opportunities, stressing that the survival of the country depends on defending democracy and working together.
