Retired General Umaru Mohammed Appeals N1.6bn Fraud Ruling

Major General Umaru Mohammed, the former managing director of Nigerian Army Properties Limited, is set to approach the Supreme Court following the dismissal of his appeal concerning allegations of misappropriation of N1.6 billion. The Court of Appeal upheld a conviction related to forgery and criminal misappropriation, which was established during a special court martial held at the Army Headquarters Garrison in Abuja.

The court martial had sentenced Mohammed to imprisonment and ordered him to refund N2,099,700, equivalent to N1,650,172,000. Dissatisfied with the verdict, Mohammed filed an appeal on February 12, 2025, arguing that the conviction lacked credible evidence.

However, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal, comprising Justices Abba Bello, Mohammed Okon, Efreti Abang, and Eberechi Suzzett, dismissed his arguments, affirming that the evidence presented at the court martial clearly established the offenses. Mohammed is now seeking leave to appeal the appellate court's decision to the Supreme Court.
