Appeal Court Orders Umar Mohammed to Refund $2.1M, N1.65B

The Appeal Court has upheld the conviction of former Major General Umar Mohammed, ordering him to refund $2.1 million and N1.65 billion for misappropriating funds belonging to the Nigerian Army Properties Limited during his tenure as Group Managing Director. The court dismissed Mohammed's appeal, which challenged the jurisdiction of the special court martial that initially tried him.

The court concluded that his appeal was inconsistent and undermined the credibility of the proceedings. Mohammed was found guilty of stealing and misappropriating funds on October 10, 2023.

Additionally, a separate order was issued by the Federal High Court in Lagos for the final forfeiture of shares worth N5 billion linked to Mohammed, following an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). This case is part of a broader effort by Nigerian authorities to combat corruption and recover assets linked to financial crimes.
